World number two Rafael Nadal ended Roger Federer's five-year reign at Wimbledon with a hard fought 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 victory. The 22-year-old became the first Spaniard to win at centre court since Manuel Santana in 1966 and the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon the same year. The rain interrupted match ended in near darkness and became the longest Wimbledon final at four hours and 48 minutes.
